Technology #1: Cryolipolysis
In simple words, cryolipolysis refers to the freezing (cryo), of fat or lipids. Fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than surrounding tissues, so cryolipolysis can induce fat cell death without affecting nearby structures.
Does it work?
Small-scale studies have shown that this science can reduce fat on the flanks and love handles by 22.4%. This is nothing to laugh at! The FDA has approved it. Although large clinical trials have not been completed, fat loss in other areas of your body is still being investigated.
What side effects are there?
This technology can cause discomfort. For several hours, you may experience redness along with localised bruises. Many people also experience local numbness. Sometimes, this sensation returns after months. Some cryolipolysis treatments have caused severe shooting and jabbing pains. These risks should be considered before you make a decision to use this therapy. A tummy-tuck may give you firmer abdominals.
Technology #2: Low Level laser Therapy (LLLT).
The theory behind this technology is that a 635 nm laser creates a hole within the fat cell and causes it to burst. The body’s natural systemsic flow will then remove the lipids and fat.
Does it work?
Studies generally show that LLLT is compatible with other therapies, such as liposuction. The effectiveness data for LLLT alone is not very reliable. Some studies have shown some inch decreases, but others have not shown any results. This creates a mixed picture.
What side-effects are there?
This procedure is safe and has very few side effects.
Technology #3: Focused ultrasound
This procedure uses ultrasound waves to focus on the fat layer. The sound waves target the fat cells, causing them to heat up before eventually dieing off. The ultrasound waves are focused on the fat layer only, so there is no tissue damage. Additionally, the body’s natural lymphatic flow carries away the fat cells.
Large-scale studies show that ultrasound technology can reduce your abdominal size by approximately 4.7 cm. The results are consistent even after 12 weeks. These results led to the US FDA approving this treatment for fat loss.
What side effects are there?
Side-effects of ultrasound technology are generally less severe than cryolipolysis. They are often limited to mild redness. High-intensity ultrasound therapy may cause mild, localised tenderness in some patients. These symptoms will disappear over time.
Technology #4: Radiofrequency
Specific radiofrequency energy uses radiofrequency energy to deep heat the fat. This can also be used to tighten tissue, increase collagen synthesis, and improve blood circulation. The result is a combination of inch loss, cellulite reduction, and tightening the skin.
Does it work?
Radiofrequency has been extensively researched and has been approved by the US FDA for almost a decade. Multiple large-scale studies show that radiofrequency can cause inch loss, cellulite decrease, and skin tightening.
What side-effects are there?
Side effects include mild reddening and mild bruising.
Technology #5 – Combination radiofrequency and ultrasound
The trend these days is to combine technologies to increase the effectiveness of body contouring treatments.
Radiofrequency and Ultrasound, as mentioned above, are the most well-studied and proven technologies for body contouring. Combining them can increase fat and inch loss as well as reduce cellulite.
